Storage

Storage will vary for each family or individual depending on their facilities.  There are basic suggestions on storing your survival supplies, but these suggestions are not always doable for everyone, so we do the best that we can do at the time and make a plan to do better.  Of course those plans usually require funding and in the current economy for some it is just impossible and for the time being the future is not looking to promising.

Basic Food Storage:

  • Store food in a cool dry place. Do not set directly on a cement floor or against a cement wall.  Leave a few inches for air flow.

  • Freeze dried and Dehydrated foods that are packaged in cans preferably using a nitrogen back flush, with an oxygen content of less than 2%. At the very least sealed in a bag where most of the air is removed.

  • Foods that are prepared in the home canning process in jars should also be stored in a cool place.

  • Store foods that you like to eat as well as foods that provide protein and balance nutrition.

Seed Storage:

  • It is very important that you store your heirloom seeds in paper such as an envelope, so they can breath.  If you close them up in a plastic bag or air tight can, they will most likely rot but will be dead when you get ready to plant them.  This warning is mostly for seed ROOKIES.  You can put some seeds in plastic bags, but they must be dried with no more than 15% moisture left in them and I would only recommend storing well dried beans and none other.

  • Absolutely do not freeze them.  Keep them dry at a moderate temperature, slightly on the cool side.

Blankets and Clothing:

  • Vacuum bags are great for storing those items that you are not using and they save space.
